Surf South Sumatra, is the most complete quide to travel destinations and surf breaks surrounding the seaside towns of Tanjung Setia and Krui on the South West Coast of Sumatra.

Nestled at the base of the world's largest World Heritage National Park it's a destination discovered by surfers and you won't find many regular foreign tourists exploring this 150 kilometers stretch of coastline.

The Surf

The Krui area of South Sumatra is renowned for it's variety of surf breaks. What it lacks in quality and consistency it endeavours to make up for in quantity and accessibility. In an 80km stretch of coastline there are 23 surbreaks that are all paddle out.

The local surf community consists of a handfull of young Indonesian surfers and a growing number of 55+ year old expats. With a shortage of consistently World Class waves in the area no pro surfers have based themselves around Krui and few if any advanced to master surfers choose Lampung as their goto surf destination. This makes the Krui area a destination for intermediate level surfers who aren't looking for that renowned machine like, top to bottom Indo surf perfection.

Given enough time, a bit of luck and careful planning you could score some world class waves in the Krui area.

What is Krui like ?

Looking for a full-on daytime shopping experience, a place to party or hang-out in funky cafés and restaurants? Then the Krui area is definately not the destination for you: no air-conditioned shopping malls, Mc Donalds or Starbucks, no fast food joints, night clubs, vegetarian / vegan cafés or gourmet coffee shops.

If your expecting to find Bali as it was 40 years ago ... think again. The vast majority of the population do not rely on the tourist dollar and ninety six percent are conservative Muslims. What you can expect to find is an off the beaten track DIY experience on the edge of the Indian Ocean.
